Defaults stay within the OCI Always-Free tier (2× VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro, or VM.Standard.A1.Flex up to ~2 OCPU / 12 GB). Going beyond is allowed with an explicit acknowledgment that charges may apply.

Build OCI Image with Packer

Provision a platform image with a shell script and capture the result as a custom image in your compartment. Runs as a tracked background job (typically 5–15 min).

Letters, digits, dots, underscores and hyphens. A timestamp is appended automatically.

Oracle-provided platform images by default. The SSH username is set from the image's OS — a wrong one fails at “Waiting for SSH” minutes into the build.

Checking which shapes this availability domain and base image support…

This availability domain offers no VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro — the Always-Free AMD micro only exists in the older regions. The free alternative, VM.Standard.A1.Flex, is Arm and needs an aarch64 base image.

opc on Oracle Linux, ubuntu on Ubuntu.

Flexible shapes need explicit sizing; fixed shapes ignore it.

Public subnets only — Packer connects from this dashboard, not from inside the VCN.

Leave blank to use the base image's default. OCI's minimum is 50 GB, which is also the free-tier allowance.

Shell script run on the build instance. Leave empty to build a base image with no provisioning. Loaded from .

BeyondTrust provisioner options — used by the bt-ready scripts; ignored by other provisioners.

Storage pins the version you synced and doesn't need BeyondTrust reachable from the build — sync it first on the Storage page. Not available on local-filesystem storage.

EPM-L is installed at build; activation runs post-deploy via the EPM-L integration.

Environment variables — passed to the provisioner script.

Secret refs are resolved at build start and passed via Packer sensitive variables — never written to the generated or archived template.

This build instance is outside the OCI Always-Free tier and may incur charges:

The build instance is transient — Packer terminates it when the build finishes or fails.

BeyondTrust PRA options — optional; fall back to the configured defaults.

No PRA jump groups/Gateways returned — the shell jump falls back to the configured defaults.

images selected — one instance per image. To launch several copies of a single image, use the Count field on the normal deploy form.

The first availability domain offers no VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro, so the usual default is blank here. Every selected image launches on this one shape — one that can't boot it is rejected by name before anything is created.
